April Service Hours - 10

I went back to the Hands On Food Pantry twice this month because I enjoyed working there so much last time. We provide free, no questions asked, produce and other groceries to anyone in need. It’s so fun to see which vegetables and fruits were able to get our hands on. We had an abundance of lettuce and potatoes one week and then the next we had way too much zucchini again. Also one of the lovely volunteers collects leftover breads from local bakeries and brings it back to the pantry to give out. So, I was inspired to bring by some bars that I had collected over the semester from our Athletics Dining Hall because I often take way too much for me to consume on my own. This month we also had a day of service through the Tulane Student Athlete Advisory Council. We partnered with Zeus’s Pet Rescue again and made some homemade dog leashes out of donated t shirts for the Grounds Krewe Barkus float. It was so great to be both sustainable and add to the culture of New Orleans. I’m so excited

March Service Hours - 9 hours

03/12/24 & 03/18/24 I went to the Reily Kitchen with Second Harvest. We packed up meal kits for children who are food insecure in the local area. It has been super fun to be a part of this charity this semester and work with. I got to meet a lot of local retirees I was working with and we were able to make our quota for the day which was a great accomplishment to make.  03/23/24 I went Hands On Free Pantry in the 9th Ward. It was a small local free grocery store that was supplied by local donations. We were able to put together a great produce section to supply our customers and it felt great for to give the community quality food that they could bring home just like groceries. While the semester is winding down, it has been great to get involved in local service organizations and is definitely my favorite part of living in New Orleans.

February Service Hours - 3 hours

02/26/24 Today we put on an adoption drive/photo shoot as a collaboration between Tulane Athletics and a local dog shelter. We had 5 dogs on campus and brought the dogs around campus and took lots of photos with their adoption vests on to get the word out. It's so fun to be a part of an athletics department that puts on community service events for me to get involved with! 02/29/24 I volunteered in my first shift at the Reily Foods Kitchen. I got to work alongside a great group of retirees and we packed up meals for school children. I'm super excited to have found this opportunity because it's a bit more flexible with shifts than Let's PLAY which I wasn't able to get to anymore.

Let's Play - 3 hours - January 18 2024

Since returning back from winter break I was so excited to begin working with Let's Play again. Let's Play is a service learning opportunity with elementary/middle school students where we explain healthy lifestyle choices (diet, exercise, mental health, etc.) and join their afterschool sports sessions. Since the start of the semester was welcomed with lots of severe weather, some of the sports teams had just gotten started, so there was a little bit of disorganization during practice. We had the opportunity to play soccer with the boys and basketball with the girls. I was pretty rubbish at both, but I think the kids had lots of fun while crossing me up for a few hours. Unfortunately this may be my last time volunteering with Let's Play since my competition schedule is picking up this semester. Our semester has started off to a great start. The Endocrine module was very interesting for me and I thought that the material came to me quite easily. Looking forward to wrapping u

SAAC Christmas Gift Shopping - DECEMBER - 2 hours

For the final community service outreach event organized by the Tulane Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) we decided to sponsor a dream Christmas for three local families. After collecting the children's Christmas wish lists, two groups of student-athletes went out to go shopping for the families. I went to Walmart with a basketball player. We scoured the store to find their dream presents and it was a lot of fun to throw in some bonus gifts with our spare budget. Later this week we'll wrap and deliver the presents to the families and I'm so happy to have gotten this opportunity through Tulane Athletics.  First semester of the pharmacology program wrapped up. I've been able to find a healthy balance between school and athletics. This year has been all about relaxing and getting ready to be a mentally good place before medical school next year. I know that these classes will be beneficial to help me retain some knowledge next year, but I am most excited to have more

SAAC Holiday Community Service - NOVEMBER 3 hours

Throughout the month of November the Tulane Student Athlete Advisory Council put together several opportunities for athletes to give back to the community. As representatives of the university, and as athletes we have a unique position to integrate and uplift the New Orleans community. The first service opportunity I took part in was creating holiday cards for hospitalized children. Being in the hospital during the holidays can be a very isolating experience for young children, and we wanted to help let these kids know that we were thinking of them in the holiday season. The next service opportunity I took part in was our annual canned food drive. In addition to donating my own cans, I was able to go out and get cans on my teammates behalf. It was lovely to be able to devote some of my time I'm already grocery stopping to pay it forward to feed those less fortunate than myself. This semester has flown by, and I appreciate that the program encourages me to get involved in the commun

Autism Society of Greater New Orleans Halloween Party - 10/21/23 - 2 hrs

Thanks to the Student-Athlete Advisory Council of Tulane Athletics, there was a super fun opportunity for me to table at a Halloween Party for the Autism Society of Greater New Orleans. Earlier in the week, we had prepared some bags of toys, coloring books and candy to pass out at the event. As an important part of the event we all dressed up in costumes (I was a physician because I was too lazy to wear anything but scrubs). For the two hours we greeted kids of all ages and gave them the bags that we prepared. We even had some tattoos that the kids loved to get. It was so fun to see all the creative costumes that the kiddos put together and it reminded me how much fun it is to make a welcoming space for neuro-divergent children. It really reminded me of an opportunity I did coaching children with special needs back during my undergrad at WashU.
